Christmas in Venice
Dec. 12th, 2003 09:27 amAh, Venice in December. The Christmas lights illuminating the main roads (each at least a meter wide, and mostly two people can pass without turning sideways), the fog over the canals in the morning and night, a hint of ice in the air sometimes, but never developing into the promised snow, but with less rain than I expected. The smell of old leather books in the libraries, the fruity drinks in the evening, the coffee at all times. At such a time, a young man's mind turns to baseball.
Baseball?
Baseball.
I don't see Foulke happening. Sounds like Oakland is a done deal. There are some reports sending Arod to Boston, Manny to Texas, Nomar to Anaheim, Washburn + a prospect to Boston, all this before Monday. Monday ... Monday is when the GMs come home from the Winter meetings in New Orleans, and should any blockbuster trades be on the menu before spring training, we'll likely see them in a few days. And then there's my new favorite Astro, Andy Pettite. Sure, some of the dopes (their term) on the Sons of Sam Horn chat site feel that Pettite was in decline, and that Brown's a better picture. And I can't argue with their statistics (see, famous 'lies, damn lies, and statistics' quotation from somewhere). On the other hand, Pettite won the big games for the Yanks (or the MFY, as they are fondly labelled by the Red Sox Nation) in October, and I am delighted to see him out of pinstripes.
I know, I know. I have five days left in Venice, only two or so in the library, and I'm talking baseball? Shouldn't I be off visiting sacred places, reading old manuscripts, drinking proseccos and ranting about Berlusconi with the locals? Probably.
But any day now, I'll wake up and see that Arod will be the newest superstar to break my heart, dropping the ball to ruin Schilling's no-hit bid in game 7, allowing an unearned run to score, and then missing a home run by three inches in the last at bat. I can hardly wait.
One of my real concerns is 2b though. Walker actually seems like the best available option, but I'm not sure the Sox will pay for him. I hear Kennedy is off the table from Anaheim, and I'd hate to see Spivey in Boston. I've never felt he actually got it done ... though he's better than Mr. Unfufilled Potential Luis Rivas, poor boy. I'm not quite sure where all the 2bs have gone, but I can bet a lot of infield prospects will be redirected that way given the relative scarcity.
Arod. Foulke. If not Foulke than Percival? Or just leave Williamson? Gotta do something with Kim. Like Siberia.
If this makes no sense to you, don't worry. It's not Monday yet.
