Some machine is calling my phone. It comes up as restricted. If I answer, it goes beep, beep, and disconnects. If it goes to voicemail, it goes beep, beep, then disconnects.

Verizon can't do anything but change my number. They say I can supoena to find out the number that's calling me. Otherwise, I can do nothing.

Except turn off my phone and hope it goes away. Bleh.

My Recommendation

Every time the machine calls, have another piece of pie.

Some phones can be set to block calls based on various parameters. I was actually dealing with someone who was calling in the middle of the music circles at Minicon, so I had to block that number. The software I use (on a Treo 650) can also block all numbers that do not have a Caller ID, if they're hiding behind something like that.

Check around and see if your phone is smart enough to run something like that. It sure made my life better.

I'm guessing it's a misdialing fax machine retrying. I've had it happen to me at work - from my work hone, I call forward it to a fak machine, then see what comes out the other end.

Do you have call forwarding? I have an inbound fax number that goes to my work email, which I can't rememember at the moment, but if you had forwarding that might do the trick - once it delivers it stops, and then we can fax the source a nastygram, or call them or something.

If you don't have forwarding, I seem to recall some modems could be configured to receive faxes, and then do the same thing, maybe. Or scrounge up an old fax machine.

Now that's an interesting idea ...
