Venice in the rain is NOT romantic. I mean, Venice isn't especially romantic for me at any time because I'm here by myself, and events of the last year tends to make me a bit cynical anyway. But I'm sure it's romantic for other people a lot of the time. But in the rain, at least this kind of rain, it's not romantic in the least. It's a cold, spitting, rain. It's just hard enough to make sure that when something gets wet, you feel it through the cloth. It's just light enough to let the wind make it come at you from every conceivable direction, so that wherever you hold your umbrella, and however long your coat, something will get wet.

The streets are slick, and footing is a bit treacherous. On narrow streets, to compound the problems underfoot, you add a forest of umbrellas above. One person has to raise the umbrella up, one pull it down, and then everyone can pass. But just like cars trying to merge on a Minnesota highway, people seem unable to make the decision, to communicate by eye, and 'collisions' are the norm.

I spent a few hours in the library with my cuffs soaking, as the tide rose and the Piazza got noticeably more damp, and decided I needed a serious break. I came to the internet cafe, got tea and a hot sandwich, watched the giants of Fiji destroy the stalwart, but smaller, Japanese rugby team (it's the rugby world cup, dontchaknow), and now am doing a little email.

Once again: Venice in the rain, at least like today, is NOT romantic. On the other hand, one could catch consumption maybe in rain like todays. Wouldn't that be romantic? I could write poetry!

(Coming soon: Jamming with the philipino-Venetian boys who work in the internet cafe.)
