The other great thing that Nico is doing lately that I forgot to write about in this post is "reading." He loves it when we read to him (and as I write this he's actually chewing on the corner of a book, but we'll overlook that). At night I take a book, usually Goodnight Moon, get his attention, then deliberately walk across the room and sit away from him. With a big grin on his face, he crawls over to me, crawls onto my lap, and we read. He's more and more tolerant of me using his hands to point out things, though his own self-initiated pointing has yet to materialize. He does turn the pages.

For some reason the "Goodnight nobody goodnight mush" page is his favorite. He grabs the book, holds it up, and usually giggles.

But even better, he's "reading" on his own. He takes a book, lays on the floor, and turns the pages in order. Sure, sometimes the book is upside-down, but it's still reading.

Ok, gotta go before he actually eats "Little Gorilla."

"Goodnight nobody. Goodnight mush."

That's cause he's a future existentialist. He realizes the inner nature of things.

And it sounds funny. And I bet you read it that way ;-).

It's fun when they grab those books-even to eat!

Grandfather Twilight is another lovely bedtime book. For livelier times, I used to enjoy reading Jamberry to them.

Yeah, I need more bedtime books, as I don't want him fixated on Goodnight Moon forever. There's a 14-year old girl that Shannon met the other day who watches Barney before she goes to bed every night because she's been doing it for 10 years and now can't be weened off of it!

A book before bed is a great habit.

A specific book ... not so much.

Thanks for the recommendation.

read into this how you wish, but i have students in SENIOR KINDERGARTEN!!! (5 and 6 years old) who still have difficulty looking at books and "reading" - looking at the pictures, seeing letters they know, finding meaning in talking to a friend about it. so nico's doing GREAT! it's so important that all children are exposed to books in any environment, to be given chances to learn things, to experience things.

nico is so ahead of the curve on so many different levels thanks to you, shannon and the people around you.

i'll give the bedtime book some thought, and i'll ask some other people for their suggestions.

Thanks!

He's got great receptive language and surprisingly good attention (considering how young he is). He's also just a nice guy to be around.
