My best time in Italy was in Umbria. I stayed in Perugia for a conference, and I visited both Assisi and Gubbio. (I am probably mangling the spelling of Gubbio. Apologies; I am in Boston and without my maps.) It's a beautiful area of the country. The towns are pretty. The countryside is pretty. The food is delicious.
Perugia especially was beautiful. Like the other Umbrian towns, it's built on a hill. Roads go up and down, and occasionally under and over each other. The whole town looks like it might slide off at any moment. But it never does.
I had a laundry altercation in Perugia, but I seem to have laundry altercations regularly when I go to Italy.
