If you use Firefox (best browser around, IMHO, and it works on Macs and PCs and Linux), there are many options to get that stuff to stop. I use an extension for Firefox called Flashblock that I like a lot-- any time there's some flash on a page, it gives me a little icon instead of whatever it is. The icon is of a play button, so ifyou want to see what that bit of business is, you just hit the "play" button.
You can also adjust things in the Firefox settings themselves. Under Preferences > Content, you can turn off Java, Javascript, popups, etc. You can always turn 'em back on if you need to for a specific site. There's also a nifty extension that makes it really easy to do all sorts of stuff (like toggle that off and on quicklike); I wouldn't browse without it.
