“The thing about toddlers is that they are uncivilized,” Dr. Karp says. “Our job is to civilize them, to teach them to say please and thank you, don’t spit and scratch and don’t pee anywhere you want. These are the jobs you have with a toddler.”

The article amused me.

Funny. I would have a hard time talking like that in public.

I was curious was health problems could be effecting the toddler who tantrums all the time. Cause I've certainly known those kids and they had no know health problems.

Imagine a classroom of them.......

Food sensitivities and allergies, for one, have been linked to behavioural problems like hyperactivity and problems with anger management.

I have yet to work with a kid where I believed that food sensitivities were behind their behavior.

I had a cousin who they believed sugar and dyes were why he was so unmanagable his restricted diet never seemed to make much of a difference. In his case I think it was bad genes from his father who despite never living with and hardly seeing he turned out just like.

I'm not saying it doesn't exist but I think it's less common then docs looking for answers think. Right up there with ritalin. I'm sure there are plenty of kids who do need it just not anywhere near as many as get prescribed it.

It's a really good metaphor. They really can be quite uncivilized.

"We are the namers of things."

Man I wish I could remember who I'm quoting when I say that, but it's our #1 job as parents, IMHO.
