This article in the NY Times Magazine is a must-read as it seems to clearly articulate a number of things that many people do not understand about Islam, particularly Shariah. I do not know if the author's location of the transformation of Shariah to something less flexible to the late 19th/c Ottoman Empire is controversial or not, but it seems reasonable.

Doh. It's listed as "subscription required." Too bad, as i've been making a point of reading about Islam lately.

All NY Times stuff is free, though some of it you have to sign in for (but you can just use bugmenot extension to get through that).

Hmmm, it doesn't even make me sign in for it?

Registration to NYT online is free. Once you're registered and signed in, it keeps you logged in pretty much permanently.

Bugmenot works, says the wife, regardless.

Yes, but doesn't Bugmenot work by using/sharing an existing "fake" login? So the principle is the same: NYT keeps you logged in once you're logged in, so you don't need to enter a login to view articles.

Yes. I had, however, logged out when I tried it, but not cleared cookies.
