Potty Humor

lollardfishI will cut all posts about bathroom-related events. This one is quite positive, but still refers to poo. Over the next few years there are likely to be more of them. Sorry.
For many months, Nico often pooed while in the tub. It relaxed him, he tends towards constipation, and we have gotten very good at noticing and getting him out and onto either the actual toilet (when traveling) or his kiddie-potty. There have been some disgusting and epic disaster, but at least he isn't taking a laxative every day like he did throughout months 9-15 or so.
In recent months, we've shifted the pre-bath ritual to include a little time sitting on the potty, talking about the potty, encouraging going in the potty (never happens), putting him back in the potty when he starts to go in the tub, and otherwise trying to relate the act of bowel movement to the kiddy potty. Yay, parenting.
At any rate, Nico has been signing bath (sort of) lately, which is exciting. Yesterday, though, he went to the bathroom at 10 or so in the morning, signed "bath," and I told him no that it wasn't time for a bath. He did it again. I told him no. He went away into his room, stood up against something, and pooped. I thought ... huh, that's interesting. It's like he was telling me he needed to go potty.
Tonight, right after dinner, he went toward the bathroom. I brought him in, stripped him, and sat him on the toilet. 3-4 minutes later, we had our first successful Nico-initiated trip to the bathroom. He's now in the bath, with Shannon, and I am feeling this strange sense of cautious optimism. Are we starting potty training? Did we just do something good? Does Nico get it? I can't say for sure that he has managed to relate "bath" with - that feeling inside that tells him that he needs to poo. But ... as Shannon wisely said, what just happened can't be a bad thing!

Date: 2008-12-07 01:28 am (UTC)We trained Tom to pee in the potty by taking him to stand in the bathtub in the morning (he always woke dry), taking off his diaper, and running a little warm water to encourage him. Once he had that down we took him to the toilet and ran the water; he caught on real quick!
Of course, once he decided that toilet seats always belong down, we decided that he would have to always sit; but that's an autism thing.
