I am going to play at this tonight. One of the guys who runs it invited me a year and a half ago, but I think tonight is the night!

I am still grumpy about missing Fred Eaglesmith on 1/3.

I think I'll play $300 car, Run boy Run, and a third something:

Something trad-like? (Rider, Look on and Cry?)
A country song I wrote? (Last Call Waltz, Little Miss Lonesome)
A country-roots cover? (Let's Kill Saturday Night. If I could).

Hmmmm.

I'd be grumpy about missing CJ Chenier, too. They played my first WFF, and to great effect, too.

How does Little Miss Lonesome go?

I don't know if you've heard it. I wrote it last spring and have played at parties at which you attended, but were you in the room?

Little Miss Lonesome, outside the bar
Dressed all in red like a big movie star
Studded with diamonds / eyes cut with tears
I said, "Little Miss Lonesome, can I buy you a beer."

I wrote it to show how cool I was. It demonstrates ably how pathetic I was. I like it.

Well, then, I don't know.

K. [you've considered "Time to Get a Gun"?]

I can't play Fred Eaglesmith. He was there last week.

Rani Arbo got up on the stage at the Cedar and sang "Oh, Death" the same week that Ralph Stanley did.

Well, that's more chutzpah than I have. :)

Also, I'd do Lucille or Freight Train if I were to do an Eaglesmith.

I was at both performances. I asked her. She had no idea.

K. [I suggest having about 6 songs you're ready to play well, and decide among them on the fly]

Fitzgerald's is a great place to play. Best of luck!

Eh, you know, open mic nights are low stress. Just a nice chance to get out and hear music and play a little before term starts.

Well, personally I like "Long Black Hair" (hope I have the title right, since there's no recording (hint hint :), I have to by memory).

Two car songs might be too much though.

I'm never sure that song reads with an audience not already paying attention.

Hmm, that's something I'd not considered.

Personally, that was the song of yours that made me pay closer attention to what you were singing... but I am aware that I do not fit the norms. You know audiences better than I.

I may try it next time, having done well this time with the longer song "Run Boy Run."

I hope you did Last Call Waltz, personally :).

This just doesn't happen here:

"Hey man (man being a guy who has played Madison or upmteen years, do you know any open mics in town?"

"Nope."

Stupid small town.

I did $300 Car and Run Boy Run. The first was a solid warmup and the latter got a lot of attention. It was only a 2-song open mic, as it turns out.
