Go Boy Go!
Mar. 4th, 2009 10:30 pmLast Wednesday was beautiful, so I took Nico outside and put him on his little riding toy.
As I posted previously, Nico learned how to ride his rocket around the house and had ridden the outside toy 10-15 feet out on the sidewalk. I thought we'd ride around back and forth in front of the house again. Having gone fifteen feet or so and stopped, I figured I would turn Nico around. He threw a fit. I put him back down and he continued on his way. This repeated several times until suddenly Nico had gone the hundred yards or so (really, it's a long block) to the end of the block! He was discovering, before my very eyes, that he could go! That there was a world and he could locomote his own way down the sidewalk.
The next morning we repeated the exercise for his physical therapist, then the temperature plunged. But today it was 40, and we went back out again. We went all the way down the block, pausing from time to time to lean over and pick up leaves and twigs, then throw them into the air to see what happens. He'd sign "help" when he couldn't reach one, but his balance was pretty good. We had to stop at one point when Nico decided he wanted to crawl around, and I explained to him (holding him as he shouted at me) that we could either go inside or ride the toy, but those were the only options. You never really know how much he understands, but I put him back on the toy and he stopped fussing, choosing instead to go go go! At the end of the block, we turned around (with some fussing), then went all the way back to the house. Nico's occupational therapist arrived, and back we went down to the end of the block again!
As we reached the turning point for the second time that day, Nico, who had been going with considerably velocity and much more control, put his feet down, looked up at me, and raised his arms into the air. I picked him up and he sagged his tired-little self against me. Up, up, up onto my shoulders we went back to the house.
Tomorrow, upper 50s. We're gonna be out on the sidewalk.
(This is a really bad video shot from my cellphone. I'll get good video when possible).
