But not the hippopotamus. A play in many acts.
A hog and a frog cavort in a bog.Nico puts his hand under his chin, approximating the sign for froggy.
But not the hippopotamus.
Nico shakes his head. No no no!
A cat and two rats are trying on - what are they trying on, Nico?
Nico taps his head, hand flat, signing "hat." He says, "eh, eh," getting the right vowel tone.
That's right Nico, hats! But not the hippopotamus.
Nico shakes his head. No no no!
A moose and a goose ... how do you say moose?
Nico puts his thumbs on his head, fingers up, like antlers.
...together have juice.
Nico brings his hand to his mouth, as he does when thirsty.
Good! But not the hippopotamus.
Nico shakes his head. No no no!
A bear and a hare have been to a fair. How do you say, bear?
Nico shakes his fists back and forth and, whispering, says, "raaaaarrrrrr."
How about hare? Bunny? Hop hop hop?
Nico says, "op" and bounces his right hand up and down across the space between us, two fingers sort of separated from the rest of his hand.
But not the hippopotamus.
Nico shakes his head. No no no!
Now the hog and the frog hurry out for a jog, with the cat and the rats in their new running hats.
Nico taps his head. "Aeh. Aeh."
While the moose (antlers) and the bear and the goose and the hare are doing their best to keep up with the rest.
So much excitement. Signs abandoned.
But not the hippopotamus.
Nico shakes his head. No no no!
Then the animal pack comes scurrying back saying, "HEY! COME JOIN THE LOT OF US!"
Giddy with excitement.
And she just doesn't know - Should she stay? Should she go?
Some shouting.
"BUT YES! THE HIPPOPOTAMUS!"
Nico grabs the book, shouting in glee, armadillo forgotten, and starts to read it again, backwards. Soon thereafter, he's lying in my arms as I sing him a lullaby or three and he drifts downwards towards sleep.
But not the hippopotamus.
Nico shakes his head. No no no!
