You stand at the bottom--after that, it depends on your field. In the sciences, an A is the top step; in the humanities, an A is the bottom step.

I went out and got some erasable red pens before starting in marking the final exams. They erase much better than red pencil lead does.

No shocked protests yet, and I filed final grades Monday. Overall, they separated out into tightly-packed clumps with 20-point gaps between them all the way from top to bottom, so I feel like my assignments, test questions, and marking actually worked out. Either the teaching or the prerequisites weren't ideal, though -- or I just got unlucky; but I had Fs and Ds in the class.
