- Mon, 23:30: I've been thinking about commencement speakers, since I failed to write an op-ed about it when it was timely.
- Mon, 23:31: It seems to me that a commencement speaker is a different kind of thing than just a speaker on campus. It becomes a symbol of your degree.
- Mon, 23:32: 3) These rituals matter. We tell students that the pomp, the dress, the music, and processions, and the speeches matter. And they do.
- Mon, 23:32: 4) So if a student looks at their commencement speaker and say, "this person is immoral," are we really to critique them for protesting?
- Mon, 23:33: 5) Now that said, immorality is subjective. It's a complicated slope, and it's not that every protest merits compliance from admin.
- Mon, 23:34: 6) I've been very troubled when controversial speakers have not been able to speak at all on a campus. That is a closing of minds.
- Mon, 23:34: 7) But for commencement? Student activism is good. We want young people engaged. The snarky condemnations are really irritating me.
- Mon, 23:35: RT @SydneyUniPress: An Academic Working Dad by @lollardfish http://t.co/l1dFjSzcFt via @chronicle
- Mon, 23:36: 8) To sum up: If we say these rituals matter, then we cannot be surprised when students take the symbols seriously. #DiplomaByInstagram
