Settled

And so I am back in Venice, mostly saddled with a head cold that is now heading down to my chest. The weather is perfect, crisp and sunny, as really it has been nearly every day I've been here so far. If only it can hold out until my parents come. And Bruce and Karen ...

I am afraid by the time Shannon comes in November winter will be here, whatever that turns out to mean for Venice, but we'll be heading south anyway.

The apartment is fine. The rooms are small, and it will be cramped when visitors come. The hot water is ... odd ... It runs hot for a bit. Then goes ice cold. If you turn it off and start it again, it comes out hot again. Some homeowner type explain this to me.

Otherwise my trainride here was fine, and I am buying groceries, paying rent, and otherwise trying to figure out how to live in this space. I am coughing too much right now to head to the library, so will put that off until tomorrow or Friday, depending on how I feel.

That's really all the news. Too bleary for introspection, but at least I can make chicken soup. If I can find a chicken ...

The avg. high in November is 52 F. And I promise not to care.

Shannon(who has some chickens she's willing to donate.)

"Some homeowner type explain this to me."

That's an easy one. Cheap rent = poor plumbing.

My guess would be there's less water pressure in the hot pipes than in the cold, so after a while the cold takes over, and then when you close the pipes it gives the hot a chance to catch up.

Course, no one ever gave me any plumbing awards.

Well sure, if you want to get all technical and everything.

"If only it can hold out until my parents come. And Bruce and Karen ..."

With so many visitors, are you going to get any work done?

Yar. It's a week of intense work (starting tomorrow), then parents. Then you two. Then seven weeks of work. Then Shannon. Then a few more weeks of work ...

I've stopped coughing, so off to the library for me tomorrow. Tonight I organize my notes and such. After the travelling, I am quite looking forward to it. The Marciana is such a nice place to work.

Water

Small hot water heater-or-large one that is empty quite a bit. If it runs hot, then cold, that means there is a very limited supply of hot water which is used up. Turning it off lets the water heat up a minimal amount (again) thus giving you hot water momentarily. Or, it hates you. Either way, really. I seem to be way behind reading these ;).
