I hate videos and adverts that play on my screen when I'm reading, say, the NYtimes. Should I uninstall Flash? Is there a better way?

Use lynx.

If you use Firefox (best browser around, IMHO, and it works on Macs and PCs and Linux), there are many options to get that stuff to stop. I use an extension for Firefox called Flashblock that I like a lot-- any time there's some flash on a page, it gives me a little icon instead of whatever it is. The icon is of a play button, so ifyou want to see what that bit of business is, you just hit the "play" button.

You can also adjust things in the Firefox settings themselves. Under Preferences > Content, you can turn off Java, Javascript, popups, etc. You can always turn 'em back on if you need to for a specific site. There's also a nifty extension that makes it really easy to do all sorts of stuff (like toggle that off and on quicklike); I wouldn't browse without it.

I use firefox. Flashblock sounds PERFECT. Thanks.

Flashblock rocks. Sometimes I like playing flash stuff, but now it's under my control. Thanks again.
