Christopher Hitchens on Harry Potter 7.

Discussion of the phenomenon. Critical, but not in an ad hominem sort of way. Worth a read even by fans.

I haven't written anything emotional about Nicholas in a long time, other than to express joy at the myriad little things he does. It mostly is joyful. He's eating solid food very consistently, he's laughing and playing, he's strong and curious, and really we haven't encountered any of things that we feared. Not one. He hits every milestone right on schedule and is a joy to everyone who knows him.

But some minor angst, some envy, not really very pretty emotions )

In other news, in the last two nights, Nico has fallen asleep in the 8:00 hour for my mother and for a babysitter, then slept until about 6:00. This is excellent.

We're really close to having a home. Water is flowing, including the drips under the kitchen sink (supposedly was going to be fixed tonight, am hoping for tomorrow, in the meantime will put a bucket under it). The counter is nearly done. The bathroom is closer, though no shower ready yet. We have some doors, some blinds, and need more of each.

Tomorrow we may be able to set up our kitchen and set up the wife's clothing. Tonight, right now actually, the boy and the wife are each asleep in their own beds. Me ... I'm posting to LJ and watching the Red Sox. It's like normality. Quite pleasant.

Ok. We have water - bathroom sink and toilet. We've no door for the bathroom, nor can it be found anywhere. The shower needs to be caulked (tomorrow?), the kitchen sink installed (later today), and the kitchen counter grouted. Then there's a million small jobs.

Things are looking ok. It was bad, though, this morning, to arrive and find no visible progress.

Edit: Oh, and Tom o'Bedlam lives next door and is sort of all purpose caretaker, gardener, and old tattered charming Irishman. But he deserves his own post later.

I have the internets in our new apartment!

We also have windows in all the windows, though not screens yet, and haven't installed the ACs yet.

We have a toilet but no sinks in either the kitchen or bathroom. The plumber did all his stuff though, we're told, so that should be soon.

The kitchen counters and bathroom wall needs tiles.

Then there will be a few weeks of little jobs, but we'll be in here by then.

Most of all, we have permission to stay in this luxury condo by the cheese shop for a few more days. So, all is well, if still in extended transition.

Probably get some unpacking done tonight.

If this seems choppy and abbreviated, that's cause it is! But I'm off to meet with my Dean.

Honestly, people of Minneapolis, I left you in charge expecting you to keep the place in good order while I was in Chicago. Two days later, look what happens!

...

I'm glad everyone is fine. Odds of anyone in particular being on that bridge at that particular time are tiny. Scary though. Driven on that bridge at least 4 times a week for 10 years.

I've noticed that there are a lot more empty diaper boxes involved in packing for this move. Less liquor boxes, more diaper boxes. Hmmmm. That might symbolize something. Can't think what.

As [livejournal.com profile] buttonlass said ...

"Tomorrow, Sunday the 29th, starting at 10 am we will be loading almost all of our possessions into a moving truck. Please come help us. :)

We have a reasonable amount of stuff of not so large proportions so it isn't that scary just time consuming. Sadly the one with the most stuff can't help very much (Nico) and we need to pick up his slack.:)

So once again:

Where: 5402 Xerxes ave south
When: 10 am til done
Why: Cause we're nice and I probably helped you move.

Thanks everybody!

If you need directions or have a question call me at 6 one 2- two 3 nine- one zero seven 5."

My addition -- there will be beer. And pizza if desired. But definitely beer. And pop and water too. But also beer.

My son is currently cutting his first tooth. There are several signs - first, there's the tooth-shaped thing beginning to push on the inside of his gum. It's all ridgy. Second, there's a little fussy fussy. Third, there are the long strands of drool emerging and dripping down his face from time to time. Good times.

He's doing really well. Read more... )

Pictures from the reception!!!! are online thanks to [livejournal.com profile] ddb. Hooray!

Some initial favorites:

Us

Me playing guitar (as a note, the problem with musician action shots is that most of us don't look good when singing, the mouth hanging open slack-jawed thing ...)

Mamma and baby

Click here then look at the next four pictures to 131. It's a sequence!

David Stemple filled with the teeth, and mischief.

What once was down is up.
Like a fountain, high, it rose.
Upon the couch and the daddy.
And upon the baby's hair, mouth, eyes, ears, clothes, and nose ...

Free time?

I left Macalester for the last time, at least this go around, at 5:00 or so today. I ran into the college president on my way out and introduced myself (we had actually met at an Xmas party, but there's no reason he'd remember me), then thanked him for a terrific year. It's a hard place to leave, but it definitely helped catapult me into the ranks of the tenure-track.

Moving on. Packing. Truck loading on the 29th. This is all possible.

I have, right now, the best friends that I have ever had. And the best friend that I have ever had. Schmaltzy, but true.

Oh, and you should hire [livejournal.com profile] mrsmodew for all your cake-related needs.

This book is annoyingly expensive.

I need a less expensive general medieval textbook. Or a more targeted, but still general, social history textbook for the period (class is: Work and Family in Medieval and Renaissance Europe).
