"Classes are Canceled and Dominican University is Closed Today, Friday, Feb. 1, 2008 Due to Snow."

I'm torn between commenting on their weakness (it's just snow people), the acknowledgment that the roads are terrible and this is a commuter school, and thinking about making pancakes.

Pancakes it is!

My street has not been plowed at all. At all. I went out at 6 this morning to move the cars (My street is plow-on-odd-numbered-days, of which this is one) and the snow was above the door sills on the both the street and curb sides. There are actual drifts traversing the street. If I was a commuter student, there is no way I'd be going to class today.

Pancakes. That's a GREAT idea! I have pancakes in a can! And bacon! And eggs!

I'm sorry you're not here. If it helps I wasn't overly excited about the quality of bacon we had. We'll have to try again with better provisions and your company.:)

What's sad is that you probably can't get here to join us for the festivities of snow day because, hello! snow day!

That is sad, yes. I was thinking the other day that I haven't seen you guys in too long, given that you live nearby.

no, but we call make a virtual party online. I'm snowed in too, and I'll be lighting a fire in a bit. Woke up at 5:45 to confirm the snow, emailed work, and went back to bed. Was treated to sleeping in 'till 8ish.

I am green with envy, living in a part of the world where we never get snow days. This despite the fact that the hills I can see from my window are white, but all that falls here is a sleety sluch...

I'm sort of appalled in one way. Minnesota canceled classes for weather perhaps twice in 15 years. There was a lot of snow in '91, and in '97 there was a day that was -40 (F). That's it!

breakfast

Damn, there's no way my microwave oatmeal is going to satisfy me now that you've got me thinking pancakes and bacon, which makes me think further back to brunch and Yule logs.

For me it's sleep in until 10 (although the 5:45 phone-tree wake-up call to call my dept members wasn't so much fun), and grilled cheese sandwiches. :)

Oh, and a trek along the road (still snow-covered, although ploughed in the early hours -- the sidewalks weren't at all) to the school to bring home all my work that I left there, stupidly, instead of bringing it home when they suggested there may be a snow day today. University-entrance marks are due next week, and Grade 9 scholarship exams due the week after that, so I don't have much choice. :P

Hmph.

Looks like all of River Forest's schools are closed today -the Catholic grade and High Schools are, too, as is the municipal school district.

Forest park (the suburb just to the south of your place) has also closed their municipal school district. The parochial schools have also closed in FP.

Now, Oak Park (where we are) has not closed the municipal schools or the High School (which is shared by Oak Park and River Forest. The parochial schools are closed.
D97 (the elementary school district) has always said that the grade/middle schools will close only when the staff can't get there, or the schools are not inhabitable (heat, etc).
OPRFHS last 'snow day' was in 1979. They make it a point of pride not to close. As one of the deans at OPRFHS said last year 'We're the Huskies, for heaven's sake! A little snow isn't going to bother us!)

It makes sense to cancel if the roads are really bad. While MN didn't cancel much of anything, there were days that everyone would have been better off if they had.

It's weird here, tho. In the city, everything's normal, but the main freeway over the mtns (I-90)is closed. Avalanches fell on it. This is the same area where we went snowshoeing recently. I guess that's an example of the snow not staying where it's "supposed" to!

Mmmm, bacon. French toast!!! and Eggnog ...

We held classes in Shampoo Banana

Last year we cancelled classes for the first time in something like 30 years. I was kinda hoping for cancellation b/c the kids are home and I had a committee meeting all afternoon: but no such luck.

Anyway, I guess my point is that not all people in the state of Illinois are weak.
