Here's a list of 99 or so songs I know. I have other lists of songs I used to know. And still other lists of songs I used to know but don't really want to know. And still other lists of songs I never knew but would like to. And there's a huge batch of pub songs I've not bothered to list. But here's 99 songs I know.

What did I leave out that I should remember?
What should I learn?

I don't actually know any Moxy, it's sad to say. Kurt did Moxy so I never learned any. I've tried to learn the Drinking Song several times, but it's never stuck.

I don't remember ever hearing about Shindell.

Try to get hold of his live album, "Courier." "Transit", "Arrowhead", and "The Kenworth of My Dreams" are among my favourites of his, and it's a good album overall -- I only regret that "Fishing" isn't on there.

Transit, Arrowhead, and Fishing (all of them bittersweet) and Kenworth (more upbeat). I have mp3s of all of them, if you can figure out how I can get them to you, or I think I've sent all of them to Kurt on a CD.

Some of them seem to be on youtube!

Thanks. Your music taste has always been impeccable.

Youtube rawks! :) I should check that out -- I've never actually seen him perform. I wish he was at the Winnipeg Festival.

Yeah, I've used it as a poem in class for the imagery/metaphor and the shift in tone. I think it's brilliant. Transit is even more brilliant, and while it makes me cry, it is much more hopeful and redemptive.

Shindell's very interesting -- I ran across him when a friend recommended one od his tunes ("Arcadian Driftwood"), and Solas recorded his song "On the Sea of Fleur De Lis"

I think he's comparable to Harry Chapin for excellent story-telling songs.

I love his cover of Willin. I'm sort of between songs right now, as I'm figuring out my musical future...

Shindell is one of my favorite songwriters ever; I'll have to think a bit to see if any songs seem like the sort of thing you'd do well. Though really, I think all of his songs are worth a listen just because they're good.

The first song of his that was a fave for me was "Are You Happy Now?" and I think it was a breakthrough for him as Christine Lavin featured it on a compilation she put together and it's been all over the place on comps since then. It's, um, simpler, than most of his songs. He's messed around with how he plays it over the years as it's been heavily requested for eons I'm sure.

"Mary Magdalene" was the other track folks fell for early in his career and I think you'd like it.

www.richardshindell.com has info; there are songs on youtube and in the usual places.

Kevin likes to joke that Shindell's songs are all autobiographical because Shindell does songs set at all sorts of periods during history, often from a first person perspective.

Shindell was/is also 1/3 of Cry Cry Cry with Lucy Kaplansky and Dar Williams, in case you've heard that album and that tweaks your memory. (And if you haven't heard that album, well hey-- it's great!)

Yeah, I liked Cry, Cry, Cry ... a little dark for the kinds of things I'm learning lately. I'm doing more drive than sink.
