One done done, as opposed to partly done. Except for the inevitable mistakes.

This is my band website. It has a handy schedule thing on it.
I sometimes, but not always, announce shows on facebook and not that often on Livejournal. If I knew who was likely to come to what and when, I'd be better at this.

Knights of Malta
Jan. 22nd, 2011 08:11 amSeymour Hersh went to Qatar and accused the US Military of being crusaders.
It got my attention. Here's the FP article. Here's a HuffPo reaction.
I find it not entirely credible and quite dangerous. Evangelical, especially eschatological, Christianity definitely has found common cause with American neoconservatism. But anti-Western and anti-Israeli voices use Crusader rhetoric constantly in the Islamic world, so to see Hersh come up with this conspiracy is troubling. He's been right, of course, many times, and it wouldn't shock me to hear that there's a cabal of conservative Catholic officers who sometimes use that language. But I'm having trouble believing in this particular conspiracy theory.

Music is going pretty well.
"The Tooles" have a new website - http://www.bandotooles.com/ - thanks to the graphic design skills of Toole #1's wife. I like it. It's linked into a google calendar and automatically displays all our gigs, including the ones that Kurt and I are doing solo.
One of those solo gigs was yesterday, as part of a monthly "exposure" night at Fitzgerald's. Fitzgerald's is a temple of musical greatness with a top-notch sound system, a spectacular history, an open mic-night that has been running for 18 years and basically consists of a group of pro and semi-pro musicians getting together and chatting while periodically sharing a song or two (egos are low, quality is high).
The Tooles have a gig at "Celtic Crossings" in Feb., which hopefully will lead to more (if we fit and like it, and they like us).
I've written a few good songs lately.
I've created a "Fan" page on Facebook. By April, I'll get around to processing some of the songs from last night and post them there!

Grim Numbers
Jan. 3rd, 2011 09:14 amAcademic Job Market.
The reality of radically differing job markets may be especially clear as 2011 begins with disciplinary associations gathering for job interviews at annual meetings and releasing data on the number of available positions. During the 2009-10 academic year, the number of positions listed with the American Historical Association dropped by 29.4 percent, according to a study the group will release today. That follows a 23.8 percent drop the year before. Last year, the association announced that the number of listings it received -- 806 -- was the smallest in a decade; this year's total of 569 marks the smallest number in 25 years.

Nico's diagnoses.
Sep. 22nd, 2010 01:26 pmWhen Nico turned three in January, we passed out of early intervention and into the school system. We knew that the therapies would change (from our house to in school, from an hour a week per therapist to something shorter, from complete financial support to relative financial support for prescribed therapies/equipment), and they did. We wanted to give school, and Nico, and us, a chance to adjust before we considered additional therapies or interventions. Six months passed. The school program was fine, if not especially good at communicating with us, but Nico's speech and OT skills were not improving as rapidly as we might hope (despite ample evidence of good cognitive understanding) and his behavior (especially around eating, but not exclusively) was deteriorating.

Our amazing children
Apr. 2nd, 2010 07:56 pmMy daughter wants to learn to walk. Right now. Didn't happen today, but perhaps tomorrow, or in a month. She's really eager. She babbles away, says, "ma-ma, da-da, more, done, ball," and a thousand other sounds. She says her words appropriately, sometimes much to my sorrow (when mommy is out and the girl is letting me know how very much I am not the parent she is looking for).
My son has learned to run. We went to the zoo today, and though crowded (Good Friday seems to be zoo day), we got there right at opening, so although there was a long line of cars, our day was basically over before the real crowds hit. At one point, though, Nico demanded to be let out of his wagon, and started going, and going, and suddenly his limbs and excitement all came together, and he ran a few short steps time and time again. It's still awkward (especially when his shoe sort of fell apart on us) and he was so worn out today, but he had that gleam of achievement in his eye as he went. He also requested the carousel with a "round and round" sort of sign that he invented on the spot, and accepted "bye-bye finished" with almost no fuss.
But that's not why I'm writing today.
We knew he was getting there. When an adult (or TV) sings the alphabet to him, he will, if interested, echo every letter with a distinct sound. He will sign something for most of the letters as well, when we sing and sign it. He also has been very interested in letters lately. He'll tap them on my shirt (if I'm wearing one with words), or our license plate, or random signs in the park. He's alert to the fact that letters are, in fact, special conveyors of meaning.
But now we're on a whole new level. It's repeatable. It's provable. It's real. He just knows his letters. There are typical kids who can't do this, I'd bet.
Watch.
I haven't been this excited since Nico started walking. It seems like an equivalent leap.

Feb. 1st, 2010 09:57 pmMost of my videos of Nico have had between 50-100 views. This one, oddly, but perhaps because of the words "physical therapy," has had over 1300. I just got a video response to a girl with CP working on walking.
