I want to come up with a comprehensive list of all the things that people have turned into alcohol. Please help me. What I want are the things that are actually fermented/distilled, as opposed to the flavors people dump in.

- Any grain: Beer (Barley is key!), Whiskey (Corn, Rye, Wheat), distilled grain alcohols (Vodka, Gin, Sool), sometimes fermented directly from bread (kvass from Russian black bread).
- Potatoes: Vodka, rarely Beer
- Mare's Milk: Kumis
- Sugar Cane Juice: Rum, Raki
- Grapes: Wine (of all types, including fortified and grappa and bubbly and ouzo and such).
- Pears: Perry
- Apples: Cider, Calvados
- Rice: Sake, Rice wine (rarely other kinds of distilled liquors)
- Agave: Tequila
- Artichoke: Cynar - A wierd Venetian liquor like Campari (with added wine)
- Assorted Veggies: Campari and Aperol (with added wine).
- Honey: Mead
- Plums: Slivovitz, or plum brandy (Romanian)
- Elderberries: Elderberry Wine
- Various Fruits: Various gross fruit wines made by Boon's
- Dandelion: Dandelion Wine
- Fig: Boukha, sometimes Raki
- Lilacs: Lilac Wine
- Cassava: Caxiri. Cauim. Pajuaru.
- Dates: Thibarine, Mahia
- Pomegranites: Sipak
- Birch Sap: Kvass
- Palm Sap: Arrack, Palm Wine
- Coconut Milk: Arrack
- Yucca Sap: Sotol
- Cactus fruit: Colonche
- Pineapple: Chica
- Maple Sap: Specialty vodka.

I'll add more as they occur to me and y'all direct me. I am mostly organizing my office today as I get set to move to the next chapter.

eGullet Knife Tutorial. Neat stuff!

My favorite line:

"Finally, your knife is not a can opener, a screwdriver, a pry bar, box cutter or hammer. There’s a special place in Hell reserved for people who abuse their knives this way."

A LucasArts (tm) recruiter just called me. They "came across my name somewhere" (I blame my friend Brett) as a "content designer" for games, and wanted me to know they were recruiting right now.

I regretfully informed them that I was a lowly medieval history professor (sort of), though I put in a plug for me as a consultant.

How odd.

So all of my auto-logins on Firefox (including annoying ones for newspapers or ezboard or even LJ and such) have ceased to work. Any of you tech folks have a clue what settings I might have messed up? I click the "remember me" boxes, but no dice. Next session have to log in again.

My favorite sports (sort-of) author had a long email interview with the writers of Rounders, the best poker movie ever. I imagine a number of you would really enjoy it:

Hope to see many of you there. More information to come.

Smoke

I hate smoke. It is this invasive, toxic, stinking, vile, substance that rips into the back of my throat, makes my eyes water, and hurts my head.

Far more importantly - it divides me from my friends. Far too many of the people I most enjoy being around, playing music with, either smoke or hang out with the smokers. I tried, last night, and am paying for it. I won't do it again, but it's a sucky choice to have to make.

On the other hand, I had a lot of fun this weekend.

Next year, it's the return of the S.E.M.P. Now with more pie.

Being able to legally download and print an old-French crusade chronicle from a 19th-century edition of the BNF site pretty much rocks.

But not as much as being to download 5 600-1000 page 19th-century collections of crusade sources. I love technology today.

Edit: It turns out that the French have been very, very, busy generating .pdfs of lots of stuff in the national library. I'm in the academic equivalent of a child who just ate tons of chocolate cake. Very happy. A little sugar-shocked.

PIE!

Things that amuse me, and an old post re-read. Still is good.

On May 25th ...

- Towel Day, in memory of Douglas Adams, is observed
- 1895 - Playwright, poet and novelist Oscar Wilde is convicted of "commiting acts of gross indecency with other male persons" and sentenced to serve two years in prison.
- 1085 - Alfonso VI of Castile takes Toledo back from the Moors. (Note from me: This was a pretty important historical event, marking the end of a phase of the reconquista, and enabling a new focus on the Levant).

Birthdays:

- 1803 - Ralph Waldo Emerson, American essayist and philosopher (d. 1882)
- 1878 - Bill "Bojangles" Robinson, African American entertainer (d. 1949)
- 1976 - Jonny Wilkinson, English rugby player. The best thing I ever wrote on LJ included quite a lot on Mr. Wilkinson. You can read all about it in my post on watching the Rugby World Cup finals in Venice.

Death:

- 1085 - Pope Gregory VII

Go to Wikipedia (http://www.wikipedia.org/). Type in your birth date (but not year). List three events that happened on your birthday. List two important birthdays and one interesting death. Post this in your journal.

SHRIMP TRUCK COMING FOR MINICON.

Car broken into last night. Nothing taken, just rummaged through.

I hate them.

Roomate's car was treated worse.

Now, this isn't a problem as I'm buying a new car, except that now I don't really want to buy a new car until we move.

I wish I could move June 1.

Blaukrauti

1 medium red onion, thinly sliced
6 cups chiffonade (1/2 inch ribbons) red cabbage
4 sage leaves
1 clove garlic
2 cups red wine vinegar
2 tablespoons salt
2 tablespoons sugar

Place all ingredients in a 6-quart pot and cover. Bring to a boil over high flame and reduce to simmer. Cook covered 40 to 50 minutes, stirring frequently or until very tender. Can be reheated with great success.

Yum. It's in now.

This is a Memory-Wiki piece (whatever that means) by one of my brother's best friends. My brother is "Curtis" in the piece, and both of them played basketball with Barack Obama.

Basketball with Barack.
