99 songs I know

Here's a list of 99 or so songs I know. I have other lists of songs I used to know. And still other lists of songs I used to know but don't really want to know. And still other lists of songs I never knew but would like to. And there's a huge batch of pub songs I've not bothered to list. But here's 99 songs I know.

What did I leave out that I should remember?
What should I learn?

Is "When I was born" the BNL song I know as "What a Good Boy"?

[identity profile] lollardfish.livejournal.com 2008-06-15 07:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Surely.

I often don't have real titles as this is just a working list for me.

I don't see venice is sinking.

Wise wife!

[identity profile] ferrousoxide.livejournal.com 2008-06-15 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)
You should surely learn The Old Dun Cow. And i had no idea you knew the Queen of Argyle, i love that song.

[identity profile] lollardfish.livejournal.com 2008-06-15 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I am not an Old Dun Cow fan, if it's the song I am thinking of.

I used to do a funk version of Queen of Argyle Socks. It's a little overdone in the Mpls Celtic music market/Renn Fest market, so I stopped doing it much.

I think you should learn "Read About Love" by Richard Thompson. It'd be hilarious. :)

[identity profile] lollardfish.livejournal.com 2008-06-15 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Good song.

[identity profile] ferrousoxide.livejournal.com 2008-06-15 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Or you could just do a folk version of Never Gonna Give You Up ;P

[identity profile] kalmn.livejournal.com 2008-06-15 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
ooh ooh!

there is a band named common rotation, which i have been wishing people would learn songs from. i have no idea if they are good for music parties or covering or whatnot, but if you are looking to hear new songs, that might be a good place to start.

http://www.theunionmaid.com/ has samples of various quality.

uh, i could go on but i'm about to be late for dinner.

I am about to get geek all over your music.:)

Hey it's Warren!

I really liked Common Rotation when I got to see them at Gingko in St. Paul a couple years back. I have some of their stuff on my iPod.:)

[livejournal.com profile] mr_niggle can probably tell you the writer of "June is A-Comin'".

[identity profile] lollardfish.livejournal.com 2008-06-15 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, but asking people is hard! I thought I'd post to the list and hope he or his wife saw it.

[identity profile] zinzinzinnia.livejournal.com 2008-06-15 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't see "The Drinking Song" on there... or any Moxy, for that matter.

Have I recommended Richard Shindell to you before? If not, I am now. I know I've mentioned him to [livejournal.com profile] madtruk.

[identity profile] lollardfish.livejournal.com 2008-06-15 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't actually know any Moxy, it's sad to say. Kurt did Moxy so I never learned any. I've tried to learn the Drinking Song several times, but it's never stuck.

I don't remember ever hearing about Shindell.

You forgot to ask for the songs we never want to hear again.

K. [and you know what's on my list]

You at least used to to "I'd Love to Kiss the Bangles" by the Saw Doctors as well.

And it seems there aren't nearly enough Jesus songs in there.

I've always thought people should learn some songs by Paul Westerberg and/or The Replacements ... You might try "Love Untold" or "Angels Walk" from the album Eventually. Or "Dyslexic Heart" available on the album "The Resterberg." They're all in the iTunes music store or I can burn you copies if you'd like.

[identity profile] lollardfish.livejournal.com 2008-06-16 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
I'd love to Kiss the Bangles is on the list of songs I once knew but no longer know and don't really feel it's important I re-learn it. Is it on the wrong list? :)

I'll check those up. Burned copies will up the chances of me learnin' stuff.

It appears that you left Hit Somebody! (The Hockey Song) off the list, whether intentionally or otherwise.

I'd like, someday, to hear you do Part Man, Part Monkey - but it may fall into the category of songs you're not interested in learning...

[identity profile] lollardfish.livejournal.com 2008-06-16 06:11 am (UTC)(link)
I don't actually know the song. Play it for me, please, when next we are together!

99 songs...too many to go through...must not...worry...so glad Shannon caught Venice...

If you left your originals off that you enjoy, shame on you.

Steve Goodman biography

(Anonymous) 2008-06-17 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Good to see your post mentioning "Door Number Three" and "City of New Orleans" by Steve Goodman. He often doesn't get his due. You might be interested in my 800-page biography, "Steve Goodman: Facing the Music." The book delves deeply into the genesis of "City of New Orleans," and Arlo Guthrie is a key source among my 1,050 interviewees and even contributed the foreword. Plus, there is background on "Door Number Three" and lots of detail about its co-writer, Jimmy Buffett, who also was an interviewee for the book.

You can find out more at my Internet site (below). Amazingly, the book's first printing sold out in just eight months, all 5,000 copies, and a second printing of 5,000 is available now. The second printing includes hundreds of little updates and additions, including 30 more photos for a total of 575. It just won a 2008 IPPY (Independent Publishers Association) silver medal for biography: http://www.independentpublisher.com/article.php?page=1231. To order a second-printing copy, see the "online store" page of my site. Just trying to spread word about the book. Feel free to do the same!

I'm not sure if you'll read this, but thanks. My father is a Goodman devotee and owns a copy of your biography. He's read it carefully and found it marvelous. Congratulations on your opus.

I wonder what other Steve Goodman songs I should learn. I've been listening to him for years.

[livejournal.com profile] dreamshark is of the opinion that you should add Nashville Cats to your repertoire...

[identity profile] lollardfish.livejournal.com 2008-06-18 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not actually a fan of that song, through no fault of its own.

I just remembered (and heard it in the car) about Nik Kershaw's "Billy". I think you would both enjoy doing it (I think it meshes with your style) and others would enjoy hearing it. You should add it to your list.

mp3.

[identity profile] lollardfish.livejournal.com 2008-06-29 01:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Neat song, thanks. I've never heard Kershaw before.
