The word of the day is "apotropaic."

[livejournal.com profile] davidschroth says it *is* a cool word, and you should all look it up, and I should encourage you to do so.

No, the word of the day is "broadband."

Or, maybe "weboggle."

I really think it's apotropaic. Since I had to look it up.

That *is* a cool word.

You really should have encouraged people to look it up.

I thought that was self evident by placing the word there with no hint of its meaning.

I took that (placing it there with no hint of its meaning) as a subtle continuation of the jargon in the thesis thread, which did not encourage me to look up its meaning.

When you said that you had to look it up, that became a hint that I should look it up.

Thanks for the new word.

It's really keen. And is the right use of jargon, since it compresses a LOT into a single phrase.

Heck with the word; I want the ability.

My friend J (a professor of Italian and the person with whom I go to cons) has an apotropaic umbrella: when she carries it, it doesn't rain.

Oooh, nice usage.

I like Italian professors. Where is she at?

Er...Shiny Halo U. (Sorry; I moan about it enough that I don't want to bandy its name about in public...)

Har. Ok. I like shiny halos.

Have we met RL? Do I know you? I am awfully slow sometimes about who is who on the internet.

Hmm. I sense NeoG.

Or maybe it's just a movement in the Force.

Confirmed, NeoG is the vector of goodness. Carry on. :)

OK, now I have this mental image of a Saturday morning kids' show from the '70s, kind of like O Mighty Isis...

"NeoGrammarian...VECTOR OF GOODNESS! By day, a fierce English professor...by night, a fierce English professor WHO DANCES!"

What would her superpowers be?

Cutting whit. Very dangerous. Slices through egos at will.

Oh yeah! And a pen-shaped sword! Or maybe a sword-shaped pen. I get so confused...

Oh, that word is SO cool.

And, amazingly enough, useful, as you said.

Thanks for sharing it.

You know you're a geek when ...

So, Ok, I'm running a Nobilis game, and we have characters that are the Powers of Luck and Folktales, and I'm trying to figure out how to tie them in with the plot of the Power of Rot (who's currently involved with the Power of Salt...)

And the answer is right here where David put it: apotropaic!

Plot ideas are now fomenting in my mind, or maybe that's fermenting, since Rot is in the picture...

Fate. I've read that book at least four times (it's the best book on San Marco), and never really read that little piece before, or noticed the word. It's a great word.
